When I work with burlap, I always back it first with a medium weight iron on interfacing like Wonder Under. It only takes a few seconds to apply and makes all the difference in the world. You can then die cut it, paint it, spritz it, etc and the raveling effect is greatly reduced. I "paint" the edges with a bit of Matte Multi-medium to keep them from unraveling after I get just the look I want. I learned that trick from Lynne Forsythe.
